Could be tough road ahead for local auto parts plants 8
NORTH SYDNEY — With the North American automotive industry facing a serious crisis, concern is growing about how those troubles may trickle down to two local manufacturers.
Earlier this month, Precision Finished Components, a manufacturing division of Magna International Inc.’s Magna Powertrain operating unit, announced it was laying off 17 workers at its North Sydney plant, saying the move reflected difficult economic conditions facing the North American auto industry due to reduced domestic production and customer demands.
Cape Breton Regional Municipality Coun. Clarence Prince noted there’s increasing concern in the community about the future of that plant, as well as Atlantic Castings, formerly Cape Breton Casting, which makes aluminum die-cast transmission parts for the automotive industry. (more)

Louisbourg resorts win two international property awards
LOUISBOURG — A $300-million resort and golf development has won two of the world’s most prestigious international property awards.
Louisbourg Resort Golf & Spa received the titles, ‘Best Golf Development Canada’ and ‘Best Golf Development Americas’ at the International Property Awards 2008, on Nov. 7 in Orlando, Fla. In addition, the resort is the only development in Canada to have received a five star award.
Located approximately 1.5 km from The Fortress of Louisbourg, the resort will feature two golf courses designed by golf champion Nick Faldo.
The champion course— the Fortress— is scheduled to open in 2010.
Henric Bauermeister, president of CBI Cape Breton Island Developers Inc., who are building the resort, said the development will be comprised of up to 400 luxury homes built on plots of around one acre each. Homes will be built on a non-speculative basis — in other words, a buyer will be found before a complex is built. (more)

University students clean up Old Branch Road 3
NORTH SYDNEY — Thanks to a group of students, a part of the Trans-Canada Trail is a little cleaner today than it was yesterday.
Students in the public health studies program at Cape Breton University conducted a cleanup of the areas along the Old Branch Road in North Sydney, Thursday, assisted by ACAP Cape Breton and the regional municipality.
The CBRM provided a large industrial-sized dumpster. ACAP supplied gloves and garbage bags.
About 25 students broke into teams, combing the woods on either side of the road. They sorted and audited the waste collected, setting aside items to be recycled.
They also took pictures of heavier items they couldn’t remove themselves. This information will be supplied to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality for clean up so the items can be removed safely. (more)

ECMA showcases in 2009 will include four Cape Breton acts
CORNER BROOK — The artists who will perform on the official East Coast Music Association showcase stages in February were named Thursday.
The 2009 East Coast Music Awards, Festival & Conference is set to take place in Corner Brook, N.L. from Feb. 26 to March 1 and four Cape Breton acts — Sydney-based bands Slowcoaster and The Tom Fun Orchestra, Margaree fiddler Chrissy Crowley and Madison Violet featuring the island’s Lisa MacIsaac and Brenley MacEachern — are among those selected to showcase at the event.
“The artists announced are a collection of the most export-ready and exporting artists in Atlantic Canada today,” said Wade Pinhorn, chair of the ECMA board of directors. “The East Coast is renowned for its live, original music and the lineup for our four-day festival in Corner Brook will offer something for everyone, whether you're a first-time fan attending the ECMA weekend or an international delegate looking to book East Coast music.” (more)
